IS SCHIZOPHRENIA CURABLE?
1. Is Schizophrenia Curable? Here is a Story of a Schizophrenic Patient. The Cure through Medicines and Cure Through Adjustment are Two Approaches adopted.
At about midday. I was in the courtyard of my house near the kitchen which was near the courtyard door. My son, 13 years of age, was also there. He had joined a cricket club by paying a fee of Rupees 150 per month. Another category of subscription was Rupees 50 per month.
Suddenly he started giving blows on my face and shoulder. Only with full exertion I could defend myself. He had been practicing boxing for about six months. Grappling with each other, we fell on the cemented floor. I was on his body but he had caught me with great strength that I coaxingly asked him to leave me. But he refused. I repeated my request. He demanded me to beg apology for opining in favor of devotion coupled with less subscription category as against big subscription liked by him.
Apology for what? Actually I had opined that it is the devotion that matters more than the category of subscription. In fact, he had subscribed for cricket club in the better category i.e. Rupees 150 per month. And I was emphasizing the importance of Devotion rather than the amount invested. In other words my approach was for ‘Labor Intensive’ and his was ‘Capital Intensive’.
Just before this, when in native town he had started displaying schizophrenic symptoms. He fought with the other street-cricketers in the native locality. During the stay in native town, my elder daughter had been betrothed to my cousin’s son. Next day, having returned to Lahore, when I was to carry her to her College, he was showing his scruple that she is not veiled. When I out-ruled his objection, he uttered an abuse: “xxx she has grown up.”
From the very outset, he is my only son, second among the three children. He saw light in the native down of my wife. When he was six months of age, he caught fever. I was housed in office precincts. Office Doctor casually treated the baby but in vain. A few days later, his body was in jerks. We applied cold water tap on his forehead. I did not know where to go to get him checked because it was Sunday, a weekly holiday in Pakistan. Before this we had got him checked in Services Hospital. Now we were helpless and could not decide what to do.
I knew a Lady Doctor in the Cantonment Area where , once I had accompanied one of my colleague. Because the Lady Doctor was the wife a Senior Bureaucrat who had served in our Department on deputation but now was retired.
When I reached the house of the Lady Doctor. Luckily she was available at home. She checked the baby and wrote names of the some medicines on a small paper and handed it over to me. On my inquiry, the Doctor replied that the temperature has shot above 104 fht. When back home my social inadequacy was barring me to have easy and quick access to the needful place for getting the baby inoculated. After getting the medicine we returned home but the fever was not subsiding and baby was still jerking.
5. I came out of the house and stepped down the stairs and made an exit from the boundary of quarters
I saw the son of one of my colleagues. He had newly been qualified as a Doctor. I consulted him. He advised me to carry the baby to Children Ward of Mayo Hospital, Asia’s Biggest Hospital. Both my wife and I hired a rickshaw and reached the hospital. The doctors cursorily checked the baby and made me sign a paper, which is a custom regarding the treatment involving risk of life or otherwise.
Having initial treatment from the doctor, the baby slept. When awoke, the baby was quite in high spirits. He was neither screaming nor weeping but he was indulging perhaps in a scolding rant like a wrestler. His voice was loud with high pitch. (Maybe his current highly aggressive tone, very loud pitch scaled, synchronized and fixed there and then !)
We both had gone to say congregational prayer on Friday. We were sitting adjacent in a row. A boy sitting in the row next to us, turned his face back to us but spoke nothing. My son gave aggressive remarks: “I will put out his Eyes.”I was rather shocked to hear this.
The boy was lying on a sofa. His head was towards the passage to dressing room and then to bathroom. My father-in-Law was living guest in the house. Heading towards the bathroom and passing by his head, he good-humorously touched his head. The boy uttered an abuse: “XXX”. My father-in-law remarked: “He does not weep but he reacts”.
I kept on carrying him to Race View Clink for quite a long period of time. This phase is remembered for use of Clozaril, a medicine that perhaps depended on killing the red-cells in the blood of the patients. That is why they every time first tested blood to check whether the count of blood cell may not be below a set standard .
Despite long treatment, the patient was frequently very disturbing and damaging. I was making up my mind to get his admitted in the Mental Hospital Lahore. In the first effort, tying up with my brother in law who was to reach the Hospital accompanied by the patient and myself having reached the Hospital in advance, proved abortive.
In the second attempt I approached one of the Doctors of the Hospital, paid him his consultation fee and got his prescription for my son, by showing the prescription by another doctor. Then I requested the assistant of the doctor to help me to bring the patient from home. He agreed to help on the basis of the Payment of Rupees 600, which they were to distribute among themselves – one assistant and two helpers employed in the Hospital. The came to my house in Office Campus with taxi car. They carried my son to the Hospital. I followed them on the bike. After entering hospital precincts, they approached the house of the doctor. The Doctor came out and physically checked the patient as if granting permission for his admittance in the hospital. They handed over the patient to a supervisor whom also I met more as a token of getting riddance of the nuisance at the moment because I was too exhausted to linger on in the hospital.
My first night went in involved thinking.Second Night:Next day when I reached hospital, I came to know from the patient that he had been put into elderly patients having bad habit.I made up mind to get him discharged. Hospital Office was closed and the matter was put off till tomorrow morning. I determined to stay in the hospital with the patient in the same room. So I returned home and took some bedding and a book entitled “Revelation Rationality, Knowledge and Truth” that recently had come out after much fervent waiting on my behalf.I spent night reading book. Per force, I had to hear the folk songs by a patient there. He had admitted there himself on account of addiction to narcotics. .
Once I made up my mind to expel him from home as a corrective measures. I contacted with the Office Administrator and requested him in writing to lend me the help of Security Guards to expel him out of the precincts of Office.
Security Guards Came to My House:
The Administrator sent two security guards to my home. They carried him out of the precincts.
Returning to the Home the Same Day:
By tying with some acquaintances, I was maneuvered to allow my son to come home in the evening.
1. Fight of Elephant and Tiger
There were make-believe fights between him and her mother who is bulky.Humorously, I termed this a fight between an elephant and tiger. A tendency to fight having been already developed, dislocated from pursuance of cricket he took to Boxing as his game of liking.
2. Private School with Co-education instead of Government School
Up to 5th, he did his education in an ordinary government school in Lahore. In 6th he got admittance in an other Government School. (Government school, I mention because worse education was provided there than provided in private schools). My elder daughter had completed her education up to Matriculation in A Private School. There was co-education. Had we done his admission in that Private School with co-education, hardness of his temperament may have softened out.
3. Timely Treatment of Childhood Fever
Most pivotal is the ground that was established by non-provision of timely and proper medical treatment before he was prompted to give jerks to his bodies which might have resulted into some damage to the vital tissues in brain and spinal cord which is vitally linked with brain.
4 Not Putting Restraints During Upbringing
Contrasting with some recent examples we let loose the reins on him.For example when he insisted that he should be provided drinking water by others or especially by his sisters. I favored him when he stuck to his standpoint. My wife argues that I was wrong at this point. She may be right in this because from the beginning I was against creating a fuss or making of noise BECAUSE thus my hobby of book reading got disrupted.
The story at Fountain House was quite different. But not so different as to completely dissolve the problem. Here, the setup seemed to tackle the issues systematically.
Fountain House is a Philanthropist Hospital for the treatment of psychotic patients. He was got admitted there first time in 1999.
So far he had been admitted and discharged six times from this Hospital .
Once when has was advancing and thrusting towards me I stole the chance to destabilize him and fall down. When get grappled, I was thrusting him when his mother intervened. Obviously she remains neutral. But her effort is mainly to save me form any injury. I sought her help and the Bulky Man (170 KG) was down. I made her mother sit on his big body. She herself a bulky woman once, but still retaining major part of her bulkiness. The man was up again, but he was complaining less of his fall and more of his being under a compulsion to smell the buttocks of his mother.
Later when I returned form Office, I was told that he had gone to the Fountain House. He had carried his bag of clothes with him.
When he returned, he told the reason that he was fearing that he will be reported against in the Police. This voluntary admission in Fountain House is used by us against him as an Argument when he says he victimized frequently by admitting in the Fountain House.
He was born on 27th September, 2007 belonging to the Star symptomatic of extroversion.
He was aggressively commanding dictating
As if ingrained in his nature are following physical and mental tendencies:
1. Word Get Stuck in His Mind Like Nails:
2. Don’t Forgetting Past Incidents:
3. Banning Relatives From Home:
4. Suspecting Others Motives:
5. Accepts Only Material Standards:
He missed standard education because we were not circumspective and over-watchful for him as we were exhausted by his aggressiveness and frugality. He passed his matriculation examination in the lowest grades (d). I had lost all hopes for his stand-arable further education for two reasons. Firstly he was psychotic patient and secondly he got very low grades. BUT now I feel Diploma in Associate Engineering (DAE) was the course where he could have been admitted and may have come by colors, if ONLY we would have been Over-monitoring all his Existence and would have looked for all chances for his rehabilitation. But our small system was already had been depleted by our focus on our daughters.
1. Mobile Repairing Course:
2. Computer Repairing Course:
3. Laptop Repairing Course:
4. T.V. Repairing Course:
5. Electric Supervisor’s Course:
6. Seven Times Getting in Admission in the Course Entitled “Diploma in Associate Engineering” (DAE).
Now-a-days he is pressing for his marriage. He likes sexy and wealthy girls. He does not earn even a penny. He has made us promise with him to ensure life-long provisions through bank deposit.
Following are Four Levels of Debate:
1. Between Me and My Wife:
She charges me that i did not allow any restraint to be put on him for nice upbringing. She gives the example when I favored him when he wanted that his sisters or anybody else show bring him drinking water. She says that you were very much fond of reading books and you did not want any noise to be made on any pretext.
He was exacting. I had to ride on bike out of the courtyard and bring some alternative curry from bazaar.
2. Between Me and Society
A research shows that out of 400 inhabitants of on the Globe, there is ONLY one human who is suffering from schizophrenia i.e two and a half percent. At present, the world population is 6 billion.Tow and half per cent of 6 billion is 150,000,000 i.e. 150 million. 150 cities can be populated with one million population of each. Just Imagine 150 big cities of Psychotic People.
3. Between Me and Community:
When I had a new job, i shifted to Lahore in addition to joining the duty in the office, I also reported to community Center and began to subscribe in Lahore.
